I was fortunate enough to attend an advance screening of Cars 2 tonight with Caitlyn. Full disclosure: I have never seen Cars in it’s entirety. Cars is one of the “in-between” movies. My kids were too big and my grand kids were too little. But Caitlyn had seen it and was excited for Cars 2, so what other incentive did I need?
We saw it at my favorite local theater (AMC 16 in Burbank) and we saw it in 3D. Normally in my movie review this is where I admonish the industry for continuing this farce of 3D for anything other than a money grabbing scheme. But I won’t do that this time. this time, I am going to encourage you to see Cars 2 in 3D and if it is playing in IMAX do that as well, it will be worth the extra money. this is the first 3D movie I have seen that had me wanting to throw up because I felt like I was an actual part of the movie. From the opening ocean scene to the race in Italy (visions of the Amalfi coasts ran through my mind) I often found myself closing my eyes and even winced a time or two.
As for the movie plot and storyline, there actually was one, and although I think it was a bit over Caitlyn’s head (think James Bond meets Larry the Cable Guy), I enjoyed it and she loved all the racing and action scenes. She did catch on at one point and said to me (quite loudly) “wait, what? They want to kill Lightening McQueen?” To which I assured her Disney would never allow that to happen.
There has been some controversy over the interwebs regarding violence and “drinking” being in the forefront of the movie. If you take your kids to a Disney movie and think there will not be violence, then I have to ask which rock you just climbed out from under? As for the drinking, the Cars attend parties, they drink OIL, the oil is served in many different shaped glasses with little umbrellas and such, but it is clearly indicated and stated that it is OIL.
All in all, we had an enjoyable evening and I can’t wait for it to come out on DVD because I really think Matthew will like this as well. Hmmmm I wonder if he has seen Cars yet?

Woah did you seriously just suggest seeing a movie in 3D? I’m impressed. It must be good. How did Caity do with keeping the 3D glasses on this time?
Woah did you seriously just suggest seeing a movie that made you want to throw up? A ringing endorsement indeed.
I have heard none of the hype on this but you are certainly right about violence in Disney movies. What I liked about Cars 1 was that a parent didn’t have to die or go missing in the first five minutes of the movie (like most other Disney fare).
If I could get J to a movie, this would be the one.
How many other 3-D movies may have been just as good, but you elected not to see them in 3-D?
only 1, Avatar.
